Folded Fiberglass Mats

Since World War II, the U.S. Air Force and commercial manufacturers have made great advances in the development of improved methods, techniques, and equipment in the emergency repair of battle-damaged runways. Today, Rapid Mat US, Inc is a major provider of Folded Fiberglass Mats (FFMs) and supporting components and equipment for expedient runway repair to the U.S. Air Force.

A standard FFM weighs approximately 3,000 pounds and consists of nine (9) fiberglass panels. Each panel is 6 feet wide, 30 feet long, and approximately 3/8 of an inch thick. The resulting 54 foot by 60 foot wide mat is the normal size suitable for most crater repairs. If a crater is larger, additional mats may be joined together to form almost any size required for crater repair. The FFM Rapid Runway Repair system includes joining panels and two mat support kits.

ADVANTAGES OF Rapid Mat FFMs: FFMs are transportable; can be moved easily by standard vehicles; can be stored indoors or outdoors; and have demonstrated their interoperability for U.S. and Allied forces.

Minimum Operating Strip Edge Marking System

Rapid Mat US, Inc produces a Minimum Operating Strip (MOS) Runway Edge Marking System which includes: Edge Markers and Distance-to-Go Markers.

This MOS Marking System allows for safe operation of a main runway in the event of severe damage to the existing airfield lighting system and navigation aids.

An Edge Marking System contains enough markers in sufficient quantity to mark a ten thousand (10,000) foot MOS.

Emergency Airfield Lighting System

The Emergency Airfield Lighting System (EALS) is designed to be rapidly installed at airfields and other locations that need temporary airfield lighting for night-time operations or during inclement weather. The EALS allows an expedient technique that will identify the useable Runway Surface in the shortest possible time if combat aircraft are to be launched and recovered in the timeliest plausible manner.

The EALS capacity can light a runway or Minimum Operating Strip (MOS) up to 150 feet wide by 10,000 feet long. When installed, the EALS provides runway edge lighting, approach lighting, threshold/end lighting, taxiway lighting, visual glide slope indication, Distance-to-Go marker lighting, and obstruction lighting. All components of the EALS are contained in six trailers, easily pulled by two EALS support vehicles (3 connected trailers per vehicle). Two of the trailers are generators; one performing as a "hot" backup generator should the primary generator fail.

The EALS generally conforms to the standard international aviation criterion. Because the system is designed for emergency conditions, the system does contain allowable deviations.
